$28.3 Billion: Record Apple Earnings, But Disappointed Analysts

Apple Q4 Earnings: $28.3 Billion Revenue, $6.6 Billion Profit ROBERT GALBRAITH / REUTERS

Apple has just released its fourth quarter earnings, reporting "quarterly revenue of $28.27 billion and quarterly net profit of $6.62 billion, or $7.05 per diluted share." The same quarter last year, Apple posted "revenue of $20.34 billion and net quarterly profit of $4.31 billion, or $4.64 per diluted share."

It's a new September-quarter record for the company, though earnings fell short of analyst expectations of $29.4 billion. Apple sold just over 17 million iPhones—a 21% increase over Q4 last year; just over 11 million iPads—up 166% over Q4 last year; and almost five million Macs—up 26% over Q4 last year. Sales of iPods continued to decline—down 27% over Q4 last year, likely cannibalized by iPod features built into the iPhone and iPad.

Apple's earnings call is available here.

"I'm confident we'll set an all-time record for iPhones this quarter," said CEO Tim Cook, alluding to the iPhone 4S' big opening weekend that saw four million units purchased. Those will count for the December quarter, as Apple's most recent quarter ended in September before the 4S shipped.

When asked about Amazon's $200 Kindle Fire tablet and its ability to compete with the iPad, Cook said, "We've seen several competitors come to market to try to compete with the iPad... I think it's reasonable to say that none of these have gained traction over time." Cook cited the iPad's extensive app catalog, new iOS features and iCloud integration before saying, "I feel very, very confident about our ability to compete."

Apple Vs Samsung: Australian Court Bans Samsung From Selling Galaxy Tab 10.1

Apple Vs Samsung: Australian Court Bans Samsung From Selling Galaxy Tab 10.1

After obtaining preliminary injunctions in a number of countries, Apple's lawyers have managed to block the sale of Samsung's Galaxy Tab 10.1 in Australia. The injunction although not permanent, stays valid until a full hearing which is scheduled to happen sometime next year.

The case which started with Apple claiming infringement of up to 13 patents, at the end came down to two patents, one of which credited Steve Jobs as its inventor. Sydney Morning Herald reports:

Justice Annabelle Bennett today said Apple had a prima facie case that Samsung had infringed two of its patents relating to touch screens and the gestures that control them.

Samsung had agreed to not start selling or even marketing the Galaxy Tab 10.1 in Australia until a decision was arrived at, and at one point of time even contemplated scrapping the release of the product due to the excessive delays.

Samsung, in its response to the decision voiced its disappointment saying:

"Samsung will be seeking legal advice on its options. Samsung will continue its legal proceeding against Apple's claim in order to ensure our innovative products remain available to consumers. We will continue to legally assert our intellectual property rights against those who violate Samsung’s patents and free ride on our technology."

The last sentence refers to a number of patents owned by Samsung related to wireless networks, which the iPhone 4S allegedly infringes. Samsung has been quite vocal about its decision to counter-sue Apple, eyeing at a ban on the iPhone 4S in various countries including Australia.

Although we aren't intellectual property experts, at first look Apple's claim of Samsung "slavishly" copying iOS devices does seem true to a certain extent, as can be seen in this post.

Florian Mueller of FOSS Patents, goes onto speculate:

The two patents on which today's ruling is based aren't Galaxy Tab 10.1-specific at all. They will affect all Android-based smartphones and tablet computers, across all vendors.

If Apple wins the Australian case at the end of the main proceeding, all Android-based products will effectively be shut out of the Australian market forever, unless Google or its device maker partners settle with Apple.

For now, this decision essentially means that Samsung's Galaxy Tab 10.1 won't ever make its début in Australia. Even if the outcome of the final hearing (which won't start before next year) goes in Samsung's favor, the market by then would have evolved a lot making the Galaxy Tab 10.1 outdated.

i think all this is crap and i have gone from apple to android and think everyone should be able to use others patents cause it can not be hard to come up with the same ideas, infact 20 years ago i came up with the idea of using a touch screen but did not patent it, what a load of bol****s

Stop this fight guys, will you?

October 13, 2011 at 8:32 PM Reply More information please said...

Touch screens have been around for years. Think of some Automatic Teller Machines, computer based information kiosks at hardware stores, tourist centres and airports. What about the domestic GPS unit.

All these devices have touch screens and put to market before any ipad. The concept of entering data by touching a screen is not new.

Exactly what was the infringement in regards to touch screens? 1. The concept of using a touch screen as an input output device device, or
2. The electronic design of the touch screen?

Is Apple claiming the touch screen is all their idea and no one else in the world had ever built a touch screen i/o device before them?

October 13, 2011 at 9:45 PM Reply Diaz said...

Capacitive touchscreen is apple’s invention-
And the screens you were talking about don’t support gestures like two finger zooming etc..
So samsung is violating apple patents in those cases-
But apple seem to be also violating samsung’s patents..
This is really exciting- the more there will be competition between them the more we are willing to have awesome devices from them because they all claim to do the best possible smartphones. I owned iPhone 2g, 3GS and I’m using the 4 currently but I am eager to see what the Ice Cream Sandwich has to offer.
Competition is good for consumer! Keep fighting please :)

October 13, 2011 at 11:12 PM Reply Hank said...

I have to agree with Diaz. I think Apple came up first with multitouch device.

No one is denying that touch screens have been around for years, but they were limited to single tap commands from a stylus. For example, you could not zoom in/out by pinching your two fingers.

It is justifiable for Apple to defend their products.

lol Apple is desperate. They are fighting an unwinnable war.

Sorry but, software wise, nothing can beat a flexible mobile OS like Android. Even scientists, engineers at NASA has come public stating they preferred android over the iphone on the space station because it is more easier and more customizable to use.

And hardware wise, the iphone has only apple. The android has an army (samsung, htc, etc..) of new handsets (phones or tablets) released every year all different variations for different needs. Apple cannot keep up. I would agree that the first 2-3 years of android phones had its share of problems but the new phones like the samsung galaxy s2 is changing everything.

We have passed the tipping point of Apple’s success since last february and Apple knows it. The iphone will always exist but will see its popularity diminish considerably.

btw for those who are curious;

Android now has 190 million activations in 130 countries, up from 135 million 3 months ago. Google+ has over 40 million users, and over 3.4 billion photos have been uploaded to date.

Android is growing day by day.

Apple Launches Tone Store For Ringtones And Alert Tones

Apple Launches Tone Store For Ringtones And Alert Tones

iOS 5 finally allows users to set custom tones for messages, tweets, voicemails, emails, calendar and Reminder alerts.

So in addition to pre-installed tones, Apple has launched a new store within the iTunes Store called the Tone Store where you can buy Alert tones.

Apple announced:

The iTunes Store on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch now includes the Tone Store — an incredible spectrum of music ringtones and alert tones that can be assigned to any alert setting on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.

Apple has been selling Ringtones ever since 2007, but Alert tones are being sold for the first time thanks to the introduction of the iOS 5 feature. Ringtones are available for $1.29 and alert tones are available for $0.99 in the Tone Store.

There are two ways to get to the new Tone Store. You can either launch the iTunes app and then tap on More tab at the bottom, where you should see Tones as one of the options or you can launch the Settings app and go to Sounds and tap on the relevant alert for which you want to set an Alert tone and swipe up, which should show you the "Buy More Tones" option, tapping on it, opens the iTunes app with the Tones Store.

Update:

Please note thought we have mentioned iOS 5 in the post, the Tone store is not an iOS 5 only feature, it is also available on iOS 4.x.x as well. But the only way to access the Tone store is via the iTunes app.

Do you plan to buy tones from the iTunes Store? Let us know in the comments.

Apple Working With Major Movie Studios To Allow Users To Stream Movies From iCloud

Apple Working With Major Movie Studios To Allow Users To Stream Movies From iCloudiCloud

Apple finally launched iCloud yesterday, which stores your photos, apps, contacts, calendars, and more, and wirelessly pushes it to your iOS devices and computers, automatically keeping everything up to date.

With the launch of iCloud, Apple also allows users to redownload music and TV shows to any iOS device just like Apps. However, it is still not possible to redownload movies.

The Los Angles Times reports that this may change in the near future as Apple is currently negotiating with major movie studios that will allow iTunes customers to also stream purchased movies to their devices.

Apple Inc. is negotiating with Hollywood studios for deals that would let people who buy movies from the iTunes Store watch streaming versions of those movies on Apple devices such as iPads or iPhones without manually transferring them, according to people familiar with the matter.

This is not the first time we've heard this possibility. Even before the iCloud launch, we had heard that Apple has been talking to major movie studios in Hollywood over letting users store their movies on Apple's servers thereby letting them access the stored content from a plethora of devices including the iPhone and iPad. The idea, it is said, is to make the devices' hard drive disk space irrelevant by moving all the content the user owns out into the cloud. At that time observers noted that this will help to increase content-purchase among users who may otherwise slow their purchase down for the fear of maxing out their hard drive.

According to the report, Apple is close to finalizing deals with the Hollywood studios.

Checkout our complete guide on Apple's new iCloud service here.

Apple Reportedly Has 1,000 Engineers Working On Chips For Post-PC Products

Apple Reportedly Has 1,000 Engineers Working On Chips For Post-PC Products

Apple has more than a thousand engineers working on mobile processors, according to a "Veteran" Silicon Valley CEO who knew Steve Jobs personally. Characterized by their low power consumption and high performance, these chips are a vital part of the "Post-PC" future Apple is betting on.

Apple employees more than 50,000 people, out of which 30,000 work in retail. The thousand employees working on next generation chips amount to five percent of the company's non-retail staff.

The source in a conversation with TechCrunch's Erick Schonfeld said:

"Steve Jobs told me he has 1,000 engineers working on chips. Getting low power and smaller is the key to everything."

Apple started building up its in-house chip design team after acquiring P. A. Semi in 2008, with an intention to produce chips that "help run increasingly sophisticated software on iPhones and iPods". Intel, Apple's longtime partner for processors on Macs and AMD were stuck in the post PC-era, which is another reason why Apple chose to get things done themselves.

Just earlier this month, DigiTimes reported that Apple's manufacturing partner Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) had sent a 60 member team to Apple to talk about upcoming A-series processors.

Another trend that Apple devices seem to be adopting - replacing traditional hard drives with flash memory. The Silicon Valley CEO says that when these two "Post-PC" trends are combined "form factor no longer becomes an issue".

Have you noticed how every new iteration of an Apple product delivers better performance, manages to maintain the same battery life (in some cases such as the iPhone 4S, Apple manages to improve battery life slightly)?

Apple has already said that it invested a huge amount of money a few years ago in flash based memory, foreseeing that it would be an important component in the future. During the Q1 2011 Earnings call, Apple's CFO Peter Oppenheimer noted that it has made a similar investment into one such component, not revealing what it was. While at that time, people speculated it could be touch screens (Retina displays), this piece of information can even mean that they were processors.

Makes sense right? Why would a team of 60 members from TSMC come all the way from Taiwan to Apple's offices in the U.S  unless there's something big.

So what does all this mean for us? According to TechCrunch writer MG Siegler, he's been told that these post-PC products will blow our mind away.

I agree with Zolk and Vic. This blog has become pretty lame. Their posts are hardly ever interesting and they are often late to report actual breaking news.

I used to dislike people complaining about exactly that, but the past few months, I have begun to see their point. This blog should not be called “iphonehacks”. It is misleading, considering how little they post actual jailbreak and cydia material. A better name would be “iphonegossip”.

Apologies, we will try our best to do a better job, but you probably know by now that we cover more than just hacks and tweaks just like MacRumors, which covers more than just rumors.

We genuinely felt it was interesting to see how Apple has been thinking with its Post PC strategy and what we can expect from Apple in the future.

Apple Unveils iPhone 4S; World Phone With Faster A5 Chip, Siri, 8-MP Camera, Faster Download Speeds, HD Video Recording

Apple Unveils iPhone 4S; World Phone With Faster A5 Chip, Siri, 8-MP Camera, Faster Download Speeds, HD Video RecordingiPhone 4S

After months of rumors and speculations, Apple unveiled their hotly anticipated fifth generation iPhone called iPhone 4S at the Let's Talk iPhone event earlier today.

As the name suggests, iPhone 4S is not a redesigned iPhone as many of us had hoped, it looks like iPhone 4 but comes with a number of new features and improvements.

Here's a list of new features and improvements:

A5 processor: iPhone 4S will be powered by Apple's A5 processor that currently powers iPad 2. Apple claims it delivers up to 2 times faster performance and up to 7 times faster graphics compared to iPhone 4's A4 chip.

8-Megapixel Camera: iPhone 4S gets an all-new 8 megapixel camera and a custom lens with a larger f/2.4 aperture. The camera also comes with an improved backside illumination sensor, auto white balance, advanced color accuracy, face detection, and reduced motion blur.

HD Video recording: You will be able to shoot 1080p HD video using iPhone 4S. It also comes with image stabalization technology to avoid shaky videos.

World Phone: iPhone 4S is a dual mode or world phone, which means it will work on both GSM and CDMA network, which is a boon for CDMA iPhone users as they'll be able to roam GSM networks. Apple claims that iPhone 4S is the first phone to intelligently switch between two antennas to transmit and receive, so call quality is better.

Faster Network Speeds: Apple has doubled the maximum HSDPA data speeds to 14.4 Mbps in iPhone 4S.

Improved Battery Life: iPhone 4S comes with improved battery life even though it comes with a faster processor.

Talk time: Up to 8 hours on 3G (from 7 hours in case of iPhone 4), up to 14 hours on 2G (GSM)Standby time: Up to 200 hoursInternet use: Up to 6 hours on 3G, up to 9 hours on Wi-FiVideo playback: Up to 10 hoursAudio playback: Up to 40 hoursSiri: Siri's is Apple's new personal assistant feature that is exclusively available on iPhone 4S. Using Siri, you can use voice commands to compose and dictate emails, schedule meetings, place phone calls, it can also find answers for you from the web through sources like Wikipedia, Yelp and WolframAlpha. It also can use location based services wherever required. You can send a text, ask for a reminder, ask for the weather or even the closest ATM using voice commands. Apple has covered a few more examples:

Siri understands context allowing you to speak naturally when you ask it questions, for example, if you ask “Will I need an umbrella this weekend?” it understands you are looking for a weather forecast. Siri is also smart about using the personal information you allow it to access, for example, if you tell Siri “Remind me to call Mom when I get home” it can find “Mom” in your address book, or ask Siri “What’s the traffic like around here?” and it can figure out where “here” is based on your current location. Siri helps you make calls, send text messages or email, schedule meetings and reminders, make notes, search the Internet, find local businesses, get directions and more. You can also get answers, find facts and even perform complex calculations just by asking.

Checkout the video of how it works:

It is clearly the killer feature of Apple's new iPhone. We still need to try it out, but it could be as revolutionary as iPhone's multi-touch interface.

Here are some other features that are also available in iPhone 4:

The gorgeous Retina display. It will come preinstalled with iOS 5, which brings over 200 new features and improvements.FaceTime - Apple's video recording feature.AirPlay and AirPrint support.Pricing:

iPhone 4S will be available for $199 for the 16GB model, $299 for the 32GB model, $399 for the 64GB model.

Availability:

iPhone 4S will be available for pre-order in the US, Canada, UK, France, Germany, Japan and Australia on October 7th and will be launching on October 14th and in 22 more countries Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithunia, Luxemberg, Mexico, Netherlands, Norway, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland on October 28th and 70 countries by the end of the year.

Though we can see that many of you are disappointed that Apple didn't launch a redesigned iPhone 5 with a larger screen, we think the specs bump and Siri makes it a great incremental upgrade.

Let us know what you think in the comments.

iOS 5 And iCloud Will Be Available On October 12th; Apple Announces Two New Apps – Find My Friends And Cards

iOS 5 And iCloud Will Be Available On October 12th; Apple Announces Two New Apps – Find My Friends And CardsiOS 5

In addition to today's big iPhone 4S announcement, Apple also announced the release dates for iOS 5 and its cloud based service iCloud.

Apple announced that iOS 5 and iCloud will be available on October 12th, just a little bit more than a week from today. Just like iOS 4, iOS 5 would be free to all users with an iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, the initial iPad, iPad 2 and the third and fourth generation iPod Touch.

iOS 5 comes with loads of new features like Notification Center, improved Camera app and Twitter integration, details of which you can see here. Along with these features, the new release also adds iPhone 4S specific features like Voice based personal assistant Siri (unless there's a hack, Siri won't work on existing iPhones) and 1080p HD video recording with image stabilization.

iCloud, which was first introduced at this year's Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC), would be replacing MobileMe with an additional set of features that would add syncing capabilities to any app on your device. It also adds iTunes Match, a $25 a year service, which allows you to access your entire library of songs over the cloud. Although a part of iCloud, iTunes Match would not launch until the end of this month. Sign up for iCloud would presumably go live along with iOS 5 on the 12th of this month. For more on iCloud and iTunes Match check our previous coverage here.

Apple also introduced two new apps at the keynote, Cards and Find My Friends.

Cards on iOS

Cards lets you create greeting cards and mail (snail mail) a physical copy to any location in the world. This is the description of the app as seen on Apple's website:

The new Cards app from Apple lets you create and mail beautifully crafted cards personalized with your own text and photos — right from your iPhone or iPod touch. Take a quick snapshot and with a few taps and swipes, an elegant letterpress card is on its way to any address in the world. Each card is just $2.99 when sent within the U.S. and $4.99 when sent to or from anywhere else. And that includes postage.

Although this idea wasn't original to begin with, it would be interesting to see if other big companies like Samsung or Google follow Apple's lead here.

Find My Friends

The second app unveiled today was Find My Friends, a location based social networks that does exactly what it says. Where it might be better than Google Latitude, a similar service by Google, are privacy controls. A user can switch off location sharing after a certain time, say 7pm, thus avoiding the hassle of constantly switching the service on and off. The app was in building for quite sometime, as suggested by multiple leaks over the past few months. It would double up as a great addition to Apple's already impressive list of parental control features.

Two important questions with regard to Find My Friends:

Was this the reason behind the initial rejection of the Google Latitude native app?Now that Apple has GameCenter, Find My Friends and Ping, would they ever merge into a single social network under iCloud? Also Find My iPhone has now been rebranded as Find My Devices to now include Apple's entire device lineup (iOS devices as well as Macs).  As Dan Frommer points out, this was Apple's second keynote in a row where iAds wasn't mentioned, nor was Ping or the iPod classic.

So are you going to wait for a jailbreak or update right away?

So is iTunes match going to be limited to only 3 or 4 places or will it go to all per release places?
