Apple’s fifth generation iPhone – iPhone 4S, which was unveiled at last week's Let's Talk iPhone event is finally here.iPhone 4S comes with a number of new features and improvements, which includes Apple's faster dual-core A5 processor, improvement 8-megapixel camera, Siri - Apple's revolutionary intelligent personal assistant, slightly improved battery life, world phone, faster network speeds and lots more.As expected, Apple's iPhone 4S was available in Apple retail stores in Japan and Australia, followed by London, Germany and France at 8:00 am in the morning.We started hearing widespread reports of iPhone 4S lines since yesterday.Australia:Folks at smh.com.au report that the line outside Apple's Sydney store ahead of the iPhone 4S was quite frankly ridiculous. In fact, they are reporting that even few hours after the launch, the line outside the Sydney store is still "appalling" and snaking halfway down King Street.Here are some photos of some of the first customers to get their hands on Apple's new iPhone 4S in Australia:
Japan:Meanwhile in Japan, the story is quite similar with reports of long lines snaking down entire city blocks, but Wall Street Journal reports that the launch has been hampered by performance issues with Softbank's registration system:The launch of the iPhone 4S in Japan was interrupted when Softbank – the main service provider for Apple products in the country—suffered a server glitch that temporarily suspended sales nationwide. A company spokesman said the servers were unable to process registration information.Here are a photo of some of the first customers to get their hands on Apple's new iPhone 4S in Japan:

Meanwhile things seem to be quiet in U.S as of now. MacRumors reports:Things still appear to be relatively quiet in the United States and Canada nearly 17 hours before the first launches, as we've been receiving scattered reports of lines beginning to form but with only a handful of people encamped at most of the stores from which we've received reports. If you're planning to use your GSM iPhone 4's case for the new iPhone 4S then we may some bad news for you. It may not fit if you had bought your case especially the iPhone 4 bumper before the Verizon iPhone was launched in early February.The photo below gives a side-by-side comparison of the CDMA iPhone 4, GSM iPhone 4 and the new iPhone 4S (left to right), respectively. You'll notice in the photo how iPhone 4S and CDMA iPhone 4 have the volume buttons and the mute switch in a slightly lower position than the GSM version. This is because of the black band that separates the antennas, a design change that debuted in February with Verizon's iPhone 4. The buttons were moved down to accommodate this change and this carried over to the new iPhone 4S.
This change prompted Apple to redesign its original bumper back in January. You can see the image below, which gives a side-by-side comparison between the original iPhone 4 Bumper and the universal iPhone 4 Bumper that has been available since the launch of Verizon iPhone.
Many third-party iPhone 4 cases are designed with space around the mute switch and volume buttons or have large cut-outs in that area. You may not have to buy a new case if your iPhone case falls in that category. iFixit: Out comes the vibrator motor. It appears that Apple elected to go with the linear oscillating vibrator that we found in the Verizon iPhone 4 as opposed to the rotational electric motor with counterweight in the AT&T version. This vibrator motor is quieter, softer, and all-around less annoying than its counter-weighted predecessor.

iFixit: How 'bout a close-up of that Apple A5 chip. 1 GHz Dual-core processor with 512 MB of DDR2 RAM...iFixit: How do we know it's 512 MB? Check out the marking, specifically E4E4, denoting two 2 Gb LPDDR2 die—for a total of 4 Gb—or 512 MB.So that confirms iPhone 4S only has 512MB RAM.

Earlier this week, we mentioned that Sprint would keep the GSM micro-SIM card slot unlocked, whereas Verizon will unlock the micro-SIM card slot by request after 60 days.Macworld has received an update from Sprint explaining that this was not exactly the case, and that the micro-SIM card slot in Sprint iPhone 4S would be locked.According to Macworld, the micro-SIM card slot of the Sprint iPhone 4S will be unlocked at launch and a carrier update would be pushed out that will lock this capability of the device.
