Apple Working With Major Movie Studios To Allow Users To Stream Movies From iCloud

Apple Working With Major Movie Studios To Allow Users To Stream Movies From iCloudiCloud

Apple finally launched iCloud yesterday, which stores your photos, apps, contacts, calendars, and more, and wirelessly pushes it to your iOS devices and computers, automatically keeping everything up to date.

With the launch of iCloud, Apple also allows users to redownload music and TV shows to any iOS device just like Apps. However, it is still not possible to redownload movies.

The Los Angles Times reports that this may change in the near future as Apple is currently negotiating with major movie studios that will allow iTunes customers to also stream purchased movies to their devices.

Apple Inc. is negotiating with Hollywood studios for deals that would let people who buy movies from the iTunes Store watch streaming versions of those movies on Apple devices such as iPads or iPhones without manually transferring them, according to people familiar with the matter.

This is not the first time we've heard this possibility. Even before the iCloud launch, we had heard that Apple has been talking to major movie studios in Hollywood over letting users store their movies on Apple's servers thereby letting them access the stored content from a plethora of devices including the iPhone and iPad. The idea, it is said, is to make the devices' hard drive disk space irrelevant by moving all the content the user owns out into the cloud. At that time observers noted that this will help to increase content-purchase among users who may otherwise slow their purchase down for the fear of maxing out their hard drive.

According to the report, Apple is close to finalizing deals with the Hollywood studios.

Unprecedented Demand For iOS 5 And iCloud Almost Broke The Internet – How Did It Go For You?

Unprecedented Demand For iOS 5 And iCloud Almost Broke The Internet – How Did It Go For You?iOS 5

Yesterday was probably Apple's biggest days when it comes to software launches with the release of iCloud - its new cloud based services and iOS 5 - its next generation mobile operating system.

Unfortunately, it also meant that there was unprecedented interest from users to download iOS 5 and migrate from MobileMe to iCloud services.

It seems to have also exceeded Apple's expectations as things didn't go off that well for Apple, many users had trouble upgrading to iOS 5 and were hitting error 3200 due to the high load on Apple's servers.

The Next Web reports that the traffic due to Apple's software updates was so high that it was just not Apple but even the entire internet infrastructure was experiencing difficulties under the load.

The traffic at the LONAP (LONAP is a London Neutral Internet Exchange Point where Internet and content providers exchange traffic) increased from a normal peak of around 18Gb/s to around 28Gb/s.

Andy Davidson, Director of another London-based network exchange, LONAP, told Cult of Mac:

The traffic last night was around twice what we would see on a typical Wednesday evening. There was as much traffic as we would see for a major sporting event (such as England playing in the World or European cups). Such volumes have never been seen before for a software upgrade.

Apple also had issues coping with the migration requests coming from users who wanted to move their data from MobileMe to iCloud. They eventually had to limit the number of migrations and requested customers to come back later:

Due to high demand, we are temporarily limiting the number of users moving from MobileMe to iCloud. Please try again later. We apologize for any inconvenience.

It looks like most of the traffic and with it issues have settled down today, but MacRumors reports that some users are reporting that iCloud mail has been down for some users.

This obviously brings back memories of 2007 when Apple launched MobileMe. Let's hope that things settle down quickly.

Let us know how was your experience in updating your iOS device/s to iOS 5 and migrating from MobileMe to iCloud.

Are You Ready For iOS 5 And iCloud? Here Are Some Tips

Are You Ready For iOS 5 And iCloud? Here Are Some TipsiOS 5

Apple will be releasing the highly anticipated iOS 5 and iCloud tomorrow, which includes more than 200 new features and improvements.

If you're planning to update your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch with iOS 5 then here are some tips to ensure that you're ready for it as soon as it is released.

Availability and Compatibility:

iOS 5 will be available as a free upgrade to iPhone 4iPhone 3GS, iPad 2, iPad 1, fourth generation iPod touch and third generation iPod Touch users.

Update to iTunes 10.5:

Apple has just released iTunes 10.5 for Mac and Windows users so please ensure that you’ve the latest version of iTunes.

Take a Backup of your iPhone:

It is always a good idea to take a backup of your iPhone, iPod Touch before updating it with the latest software update. iTunes will automatically back up your iPhone or iPod Touch when you connect it to your computer. You can also right-click (ctrl key and then click the mouse or touchpad button on a Mac) on your iPhone or iPod Touch under device listing and select Back up from the menu. It might be a time consuming exercise if you haven't backed up your iPhone for a long time. But it's important so don't skip it.

iCloud:

Since Apple will also be launching iCloud - its new cloud based service, we would strongly recommend you to take a copy of your iTunes library.

MobileMe users and iCloud:

Apple is also expected to rollout the MobileMe to iCloud migration page (MobileMe.com/move), which will allows you to migrate data from your MobileMe account to iCloud. As Apple had said in its FAQs, the migration process allows users to move Mail, Contacts and Calendar data to iCloud. Data from other MobileMe services like iWeb, iDisk and Photo Gallery won't be migrated, and would be discontinued after 30th June 2012. You also won't be able to sync Mac Dashboard widget, Dock items, keychains, signatures, mail account rules, mail smart boxes, and mail preferences.

After migrating to iCloud, MobileMe users get 25GB of storage, which includes the 20GB of storage that comes with the yearly plan that a MobileMe subscriber has already paid for and the free 5GB of storage offered to all iCloud users. Basically, it means that the migration process for MobileMe users doesn't incur any extra cost (until June 30, 2012).

Jailbreak iPhone/Unlock iPhone Users:If you have jailbroken and/or unlocked your iPhone and cannot live without your favorite jailbreak apps and tweaks then it is recommended that you avoid updating to iOS 5.

But if you're not sure what to do, then checkout our post, which gives the latest status update on jailbreaking iOS 5 and also the top 25 iOS 5 features.

Taking a Backup Of Jailbreak Apps:

If you’ve jailbroken your iPhone then please note that updating to the latest software update will remove the jailbreak apps. There are couple of apps such as AptBackup, xBackup and PkgBackup that help you backup jailbreak apps.

However, since iOS 5 is a major iOS update, we would recommend you to reinstall the jailbreak apps that are compatible with iOS 5.

Backup of SHSH blobs:

Please take a backup of SHSH Blobs (ECID) using Firmware Umbrella (link) so that you have the option to downgrade to iOS 4.x if required. Please note if you have already jailbroken your iPhone, iPod Touch then Cydia would have taken the backup automatically. If you see the message: "SHSH:" with the version of the current iOS running on your iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch then you should be fine and can skip this step.

After you’ve followed the steps mentioned above, you should be ready to download and install iOS 5 as soon as it is available and start using all the new features in the latest iOS.

If you've any tips based on your experience then please let us know in the comments. If you’ve any questions, please feel free to drop us a line in the comments.

iOS 5 And iCloud Will Be Available On October 12th; Apple Announces Two New Apps – Find My Friends And Cards

iOS 5 And iCloud Will Be Available On October 12th; Apple Announces Two New Apps – Find My Friends And CardsiOS 5

In addition to today's big iPhone 4S announcement, Apple also announced the release dates for iOS 5 and its cloud based service iCloud.

Apple announced that iOS 5 and iCloud will be available on October 12th, just a little bit more than a week from today. Just like iOS 4, iOS 5 would be free to all users with an iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, the initial iPad, iPad 2 and the third and fourth generation iPod Touch.

iOS 5 comes with loads of new features like Notification Center, improved Camera app and Twitter integration, details of which you can see here. Along with these features, the new release also adds iPhone 4S specific features like Voice based personal assistant Siri (unless there's a hack, Siri won't work on existing iPhones) and 1080p HD video recording with image stabilization.

iCloud, which was first introduced at this year's Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC), would be replacing MobileMe with an additional set of features that would add syncing capabilities to any app on your device. It also adds iTunes Match, a $25 a year service, which allows you to access your entire library of songs over the cloud. Although a part of iCloud, iTunes Match would not launch until the end of this month. Sign up for iCloud would presumably go live along with iOS 5 on the 12th of this month. For more on iCloud and iTunes Match check our previous coverage here.

Apple also introduced two new apps at the keynote, Cards and Find My Friends.

Cards on iOS

Cards lets you create greeting cards and mail (snail mail) a physical copy to any location in the world. This is the description of the app as seen on Apple's website:

The new Cards app from Apple lets you create and mail beautifully crafted cards personalized with your own text and photos — right from your iPhone or iPod touch. Take a quick snapshot and with a few taps and swipes, an elegant letterpress card is on its way to any address in the world. Each card is just $2.99 when sent within the U.S. and $4.99 when sent to or from anywhere else. And that includes postage.

Although this idea wasn't original to begin with, it would be interesting to see if other big companies like Samsung or Google follow Apple's lead here.

Find My Friends

The second app unveiled today was Find My Friends, a location based social networks that does exactly what it says. Where it might be better than Google Latitude, a similar service by Google, are privacy controls. A user can switch off location sharing after a certain time, say 7pm, thus avoiding the hassle of constantly switching the service on and off. The app was in building for quite sometime, as suggested by multiple leaks over the past few months. It would double up as a great addition to Apple's already impressive list of parental control features.

Two important questions with regard to Find My Friends:

Was this the reason behind the initial rejection of the Google Latitude native app?Now that Apple has GameCenter, Find My Friends and Ping, would they ever merge into a single social network under iCloud? Also Find My iPhone has now been rebranded as Find My Devices to now include Apple's entire device lineup (iOS devices as well as Macs).  As Dan Frommer points out, this was Apple's second keynote in a row where iAds wasn't mentioned, nor was Ping or the iPod classic.

So are you going to wait for a jailbreak or update right away?
